Moonshine Malware: A Stylish Look into a Real Spyware Threat

Moonshine Malware: A Stylish Look into a Real Spyware Threat

When cyberattacks become inspiration for art, something unexpected happens — awareness meets aesthetic. Our latest design, part of the Moonshine Collection at Infected Threads Collective, draws from a real threat: the Moonshine spyware campaign.

Discovered by cybersecurity researchers and publicly detailed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), Moonshine is an Android-based spyware toolkit linked to watering hole attacks aimed at Uyghur, Taiwanese, and Tibetan communities, along with broader civil society targets.

This wasn’t your average malware. Moonshine was part of a targeted surveillance campaign, using zero-day exploits to silently infect Android devices through compromised websites. Once installed, the malware could exfiltrate personal data, including location info, messages, and call logs — turning a phone into a tool of espionage.

What makes Moonshine stand out in the world of spyware is its complexity. It leveraged multi-stage payloads, strong obfuscation, and precise targeting techniques that point to a well-resourced actor with geopolitical intent.

Bringing Threat Intel to Streetwear

At Infected Threads Collective, we fuse the reality of cyber warfare with design — not to glamorize threat actors, but to elevate awareness and spark conversation through fashion. Our Moonshine T-shirt and merchandise include encoded snippets from the actual malware sample (harmless and aesthetic-only), all layered in a terminal-style design with rich green hues and clean cyberpunk lines.

This collection isn’t just for those in the cybersecurity industry — it’s for anyone drawn to digital culture, cyberpunk themes, or simply designs that say something.
